History and Heritage Pulincunnoo is an area that used to be a vast water body in the past. Later, when strong outer bunds were built to drain the water and wide paddy fields were formed and made suitable for cultivation, this land rose to agricultural prosperity. This development history, which was created by a combination of water, soil and human effort, is one of the specialties of Kuttanadu. Pulincunnoo has also achieved a remarkable position in the field of education. St. Joseph's School, established in 1898, was the first school in the area. This school, one of the earliest educational institutions for girls in the Kuttanadu region, has made a significant contribution to social progress and the spread of women's education. Growth of health services Modern health services in Pulincunnoo began with the functioning of a government dispensary. Later, it developed into a health center and then the Taluk Headquarters Hospital. Today, various health institutions, including a family welfare center and a mother and child care center, provide excellent services to the people. The powerhouse of the cooperative movement Pulincunnoo is an area with a strong foundation for the cooperative movement. More than fifteen cooperative societies are functioning here in various sectors. More than half of the adult population of the panchayat are members of some cooperative society. Pulincunnoo Dairy Cooperative Society, formed in 1976, has made a place in history as the first dairy cooperative society in Kuttanad taluk. This institution has played a crucial role in strengthening the agricultural sector and the rural economy. Natural resources and landscape Pulincunnoo, with an area of 31.53 sq km, is the largest gram panchayat in Kuttanad taluk. The land, backwaters, paddy fields, rivers, streams and ponds create a unique landscape here. Pulincunnoo, the birthplace of world-renowned agricultural scientist Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, is a symbol of tradition and renaissance in the agricultural sector. Hill of tamarind trees The most popular legend about the origin of the name Pulinkunnu is related to the ancient topography of the place. It is believed that the name "Hill of Tamarind Trees" was derived from the abundant Tamarind trees that grew in the highlands, and later it became "Pulincunnoo". Historical background The land here was formed by the deposition of sediments brought by the tributaries of the Pampa River and the Manimala River. Historians believe that wild tamarind trees grew abundantly in these fertile highlands. |
